LOST GUNSMOKE! BORIS KARLOFF, DOROTHY KILGALLEN

Tonight, July 03, 2022 at 8 PM, a follow-up to last week's MYSTERY PLAYHOUSE featuring CREEPS BY NIGHT with Boris Karloff, a birthday salute to Dorothy Kilgallen, and the premiere of a LOST EPISODE of GUNSMOKE! It's all tonight on THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO. Tune in to WBAI-NY 99.5 FM, or listen to the stream at wbai.org.

Thanks to Joe Webb, we present a newly discovered episode of GUNSMOKE! It was first broadcast on CBS on June 28, 1952 #10 "The Ride Back" starring William Conrad, Parley Baer, Georgia Ellis, Larry Dobkin, written by Antony Ellis, directed by Norman Macdonnell, music by Rex Koury, announcer Roy Rowan.

Here's a bit on the provenance of this new recording from Jerry Haendiges' post on Facebook:
"The Ride Back," as best as it can be traced, seems to be from a collection of Jim Fox, an early collector in the Los Angeles area. We don't know if he had the disc or if he traded with someone who did. Over the years, his collection seems to have changed hands a few times. It was radio fan Jim Stephenson who had the collection most recently, and connected with Joe over Facebook about Jim's files. Jim told Joe that he hoped the recordings would be shared with other OTR fans and collectors. The collection had not been available for decades.
When Joe saw "The Ride Back" in the recordings, he checked it out, and it certainly was the missing Gunsmoke episode. This episode was really important because Bill Conrad liked it so much, he was one of the producers and stars of a 1957 movie with Anthony Quinn that came from the radio script. It was also named "The Ride Back" but it had extra characters and plotlines to turn it into a feature movie. They also took out all the references to Gunsmoke. Keith Scott told Joe that Conrad and Larry Dobkin were always asking around at SPERDVAC and other meetings if anyone had found the recording because the liked it so much. The script was mostly just the two of them. Unfortunately, they are gone, but now we can hear why they liked it so much.

CREEPS BY NIGHT from ABC via the AFRS on Apr 25, 1944 #6 "Those Who Walk In Darkness" starring Boris Karloff. AFRS program name is "Mystery Playhouse" hosted by Peter Lorre. A man's eyes have been successfully operated on...maybe! The doctor who performed the operation is still in love with the patient's wife. Boris' calm voice is filled with unspeakable horror. Or as Peter Lorre observes (with a slight chuckle), "An eye for an eye."

THE KEMTONE HOUR from the Blue net on June 15, 1944 for Kemtone Paint. Dunninger, "The Master Mentalist," reads the mind of the editor of the New York Mirror for tomorrow's headlines...over the telephone! Joseph Dunninger, guest judges Dorothy Kilgallen, Shep Fields, Joseph Auslander, vocalist Meredith Blake. announcers Glenn Riggs & Jackson Beck.
