CHIE HAYAKAWA'S STUNNING FILM ON EUTHANASIA "PLAN 75"
JAPANESE FILMMAKER CHIE HAYAKAWA ON HER DEBUT FEATURE FILM, “PLAN 75,” A TALE OF THE ELDERLY AND GOVERNMENT SPONSORED EUTHANASIA
On tonight’s show, we’ll be joined by Japanese filmmaker, Chie Hayakawa, to discuss her stunning first feature film, Plan 75. The film, starring the legendary Japanese actress and voice artist, Cheiko Baisho, looks at the aging population of Japan and imagines a near dystopian future where the elderly, convinced they are no longer needed by society, volunteer to have themselves euthanized at age 75, as part of a seemingly well-organized government-sponsored program. It’s a Cannes winner and Japan’s 95th Oscar entry.
Hayakawa began her career as a photographer, studying at the School for Visual Arts… Her short film, Niagara, was selected at Cinefondation/Cannes Film Festival 2014, won the Fi Presci Award at Vladivostok International Film Festival, two Grand Prizes at the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul, and the PIA Film Festival. Her short film version of Plan 75 was the opening segment of the feature anthology Ten Years Japan.
Plan 75 opens in New York at the IFC Center on Friday, April 21 -- with the director in attendance during the opening weekend -- and at the Laemmle Theater in Los Angeles on May 5.
