ABORTION: PART OF MULTI-ISSUE FEMINISM!

1969 Women's Liberation protesters confront police after disruption of "abortion panel"

At present there is a huge media spotlight on abortion rights, ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in June and a great deal is being written and spoken about reproductive rights. But most of what is being written treats abortion as a stand-alone issue and divorces it from its origins as part of a multi-issue feminist movement.

In our second segment we will be speaking with Marisa Figueredo of Redstockings--the group that developed many of the foundational concepts of the modern feminist movemen: "Sisterhood is Powerful"; Consciousness Raising; public speakouts where women spoke of their then-illegal abortions, risking arrest--and much else (see redstockings.org for more info on the actual history of the abortion rights movement in the context of the entire feminist movement).

We'll speak about the origins of the abortion rights movement in the Women's Liberation Movement of the 1960's and 70's. We'll talk about why it is important to place the abortion rights movement back into its original context as one part of a multi-issue feminist movement and how this is what originally built the mass base of women that made it possible to win Roe v Wade in just a few short years after the Women's Liberation Movement started organizing around the issue. Marisa will speak of the specific history of how that multi-issue radical feminist movement was built and why it is important to work out of a similar consciousnes if we want to go on the offensive on abortion rights and all of our rights as women.

We will begin our show with an interview with activist-journalist Jessica Mason Pieklo, Senior VP and Executive Editor at Rewire.news, an activist/lawyer/journalist and co-host of the podcast "Boom! Lawyered". We'll speak of the major developments in the abortion struggle in this country since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade and took away from all women a 50-year established right. We'll focus on Kansas, Louisiana, Indiana, the Idaho abortion ban that the U.S. Justice Dept. is legally challenging--and more.
