SURROGACY: THE OTHER SIDE/ ROE-BREAKING ABORTION BILLS
There's a flood of anti abortion cases currently heading toward the Supreme Court in hopes that one of them will be the case that will lead to the overturning of Roe v Wade. In the last few weeks, three such bills were narrowly headed off!
To talk about these cases and what the future holds, our first guest will be Jessica Mason Pieklo, activist-attorney, avid Supreme Court watcher and Senior Vice President and Executive Editor of Rewire News Group.
In our second segment, we'll look at what is wrong with commercial surrogacy--which has just been legalized in New York State. Our guest will be Taina Bien-Aimé, Executive Director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) and a founding member of Equality Now.
We'll speak about the sexist, racist and class aspects of surrogacy, why it is outlawed in most of Europe, whether the 'safeguards' built into the New York State bill are adequate--and the toll it takes on the bodies of the women acting as 'surrogates.' (We are hoping to be joined by a medical doctor who will give expert opinion on the medical issues involved--we are awaiting confirmation of that intereview as of this posting).
Our Feminist News Roundup will include stories on: the anti-abortion cases vying to be heard by the Supreme Court; the important women's issues to which President Biden is NOT giving priority; remembering when Rush Limbaugh labeled Sandra Fluke a "slut" for wanting contraceptive coverage in her health insurance; an Indian woman has won a suit against defamation by government minister she accused of sexual harassment; a woman will head the Tokyo Olympics after the former head resigned over his sexist comments--and more...
