MOTHERS TAKE ON 'TRIPLE-DAY' AS SCHOOLS CLOSE
Feminists have long called attention to the "double day" of women's work: performing a paid job and then coming home to take care of household and parenting chores and male spouses not sharing in the housework (which research confirms).
Now, with school closings across the country due to Covid-19--New York's School System shut down just this week--the 'double day' has morphed into the 'triple day', as women also take on the supervision of their children's education at home. Not surprisingly, studies are showing that many mothers operating under triple-duty pressure are reporting more stress, anxiety and frustration with their children--as well as an increase addiction and mental health issues.
Our guest tonight is Sociologist Jessica Calarco, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Indiana University. She and her cohorts have conducted over 800 surveys, and spent more than 500 hours interviewing mothers and following the changes in their lives, both pre- and post-pa*ndemic.
Dr. Calarco was recently featured in an article by Anne Helen Petersen, in Culture Study, entitled: "Other Countries Have Social Safety Nets. The U.S. has Women."
On tonight's show, we will be discussing the findings of the study, including:
**Women feeling like "failures" because of their inability to juggle all of the new tasks and do them all well
**Society's norms: Workers are expected to be completely committed to their jobs and mothers are expected to be completely committed to their children--but for women, these expectations often conflict
**Women in relationships with men report loss of authority and power in the relationship when they can no longer bring home a paycheck
**The pandemic has ripped a big hole in the U.S.'s already inadequate social safety net
**What is needed: a robust Social Safety Net including: affordable childcare, paid parental leave, Universal Heathcare and flexible work hours for all--as well as men in relationships with women, stepping up and sharing fully in housework and all other aspects of child rearing.
Our Feminist News Segment will feature stories on: The Trump Administration trying to "lock in" anti-women's rights executive orders, so that they cannot be overturned by the next President; President-elect Biden planning on overturning "Mexico City Policy" re abortion access; Massachusett's institutes "protect Roe" law...and more.
