MORAL CERTAINTY
At its core, moral certainty involves the mistaken belief that “under no circumstances, would ‘we’ ever behave like ‘they’ do.” In actuality, however, we know exactly the circumstances that would cause us to behave just like “them,” and those circumstances are the determinants that shaped “them.”
If “we” had those determinants, “we” would behave just as “they” do. Although this understanding is indisputable, it rarely influences the way we treat one another, nor does it shape domestic or international governmental policies.
If we truly believed that with another person’s determinants we would act as they've acted, could society continue to subject criminals to painful executions? Could nations continue to justify violence against other nations?
If we let go of moral certainty, everything could change.
Join us as we imagine how.
