The Endocrine System is a crucial part of everyone's body. The endocrine system is in charge of creating and releasing hormones to maintain bodily functions. Endocrine glands include your pituitary gland, thyroid, pancreas and others. It is as important as the circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems.

On this show you will learn why your endocrine system is so important, what plastic and plastic residue does to it, and what you can do about it. We will talk about source-reduction policies.

Plastic in our environment causes havoc with these very important bodily processes. Some are known and some are still being researched and discovered. Plastic residue is mimicking and interfering with our endocrine systems. There are many studies showing this, going back at least to the 1970s, when biologically-active plastic was discovered by accident.

There is too much plastic production. About 60% of all plastic has been manufactured since 2008. There are at least 16,000 different chemicals used to make plastics. Most of them have not been studied and those that have were found harmful to human health.

This is NOT a show about recycling plastic, but of course it comes up. Most plastic CANNOT be recycled - regular listeners have already heard detailed explanations of why. Listen to the show to hear about some of the failures behind plastic recycling.

Johnathan Berard, the policy director at Beyond Plastics, has over a decade of public policy and strategic communications experience. As Rhode Island state director at Clean Water Action, he conducted the very first trawl for microplastics in Narragansett Bay.
