ANIMAL MATTERS: PET LOSS, GRIEF AND REMEMBRANCE
On the Sunday, September 13 episode of Animal Matters, we mark National Pet Memorial Month with a conversation about one of the hardest parts of loving an animal: saying goodbye.
Hosts Jeff Simmons and Erin Clarke welcome Jamie Cohen, LCSW, Veterinary Social Worker at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, to talk about why the loss of an animal companion can affect us so deeply, how people cope with grief, the importance of recognizing pet loss as a real and significant loss, and the ways memorials and rituals can help us remember the animals who have been part of our lives.
We’ll also discuss anticipatory grief, the guilt that can sometimes follow difficult end-of-life decisions, helping children and surviving pets through a loss, and knowing when it may be helpful to seek additional support. Jamie will also preview AMC’s 9th Annual Celebration of Life: Pet Memorial Event, taking place virtually on September 29.
Then we want to hear from you. Call 212-209-2877 and tell us about an animal you have loved and lost — their name, what made them special, and the memories you still carry.
Listen Sunday, September 13, from 9–10 AM ET on WBAI 99.5 FM New York, or stream live at WBAI.org.
