WITH HOST TOM NIXON
It all started in the early 1950s with Tom Nixon's mother's wide ranging collection of 78rpm records (everything from big band jazz, Homer and Jethro, South African folk songs etc. He attended the California Institute of the Arts from 1970-1973 studying music composition and performance with Harold Budd, Stephen L. Mosko, Peter Garland, Michael Byron etc. and played in the West Aftrican Ewe Ensemble led by the Ladzekpo brothers. He was always interested in juxtaposing musics from around the world in order to open people's ears to new ways of listening (and hence their brains to new ways of thinking). In 1974 he sent tapes to Charles Amirkhanian at KPFA in Berkeley and eventually landed a spot on KPFK in Los Angeles thanks to music director Carl Stone who was a Cal Arts classmate and Tom has been producing and hosting The Nixon Tapes ever since.
