AMERICAN DAUGHTER: A. REVIVAL OF WENDY WASSERSTEIN’S 1997 PLAY ABOUT DASHED FEMINIST DREAMS

On tonight’s show, we’ll be joined by La Femme Theatre founder and the Daughter of the play, Jean Lichty; and director Sarna Lapine to discuss La Femme’s new and updated revival of Pulitzer Prize-winning and first female playwright to win a Tony, Wendy Wasserstein’s 1997 play American Daughter featuring a previously unpublished second act.

American Daughter centers around a brilliant and accomplished woman, a doctor and health care expert, a wife, mother, and daughter of a United States Senator, poised to step onto the national stage as Surgeon General when a seemingly minor personal oversight ignites a media frenzy to dismantle her reputation and destroy her dreams of public service. Without at all anticipating how much worse a woman’s lot would become, the play raises the question, as the Nannygate scandal did in the 1990’s: would this happen to a man?
