CLOSING NYC’S STREET SAFETY GAPS

On the July 16, 2026 episode of City Watch on WBAI 99.5 FM New York, host Jeff Simmons speaks with Eli Dvorkin, Editorial and Policy Director at the Center for an Urban Future, about the organization’s report, “Closing NYC’s Street Safety Gaps in the Communities Most at Risk.”

The report finds that New York City has made meaningful progress under Vision Zero, including a decline in traffic deaths since the initiative launched. But the benefits of safer street design and traffic-calming investments have not been distributed evenly. Many of the neighborhoods facing the greatest danger from traffic crashes are lower-income communities of color, and several continue to lack the full range of proven interventions — including street redesigns, leading pedestrian intervals, daylighting, protected lanes, slow zones, and other safety improvements.

Simmons and Dvorkin discuss what the data reveals about equity, public space, transportation policy, and the future of Vision Zero. They also examine how city officials, community leaders, advocates, and residents can work together to ensure that life-saving street safety investments reach the neighborhoods that need them most.
