TWO OFF-OFF B’WAY SHOWS: DAD DON’T READ THIS AND SAMOVAR
On tonight’s show, we’ll discuss two off-off Broadway shows with limited runs: Eliya Smith’s critically acclaimed Dad Don’t Read This about a foursome of teenage girls enveloped in their teenage girl emotions at a weekly sleepover in suburban Ohio, and Samovar, four short plays based on stories by Anton Chekhov, a production celebrating the 48th Anniversary of the Roger Hendricks Simon Studio whose namesake will join us.
DAD DON’T READ THIS:
Playwright ELIYA SMITH is a writer from Ohio. Her Off-Broadway credits include Grief Camp, a Keene Prize Finalist and Venturous Grant winner which played at The Atlantic Theater Company; Two Girls which played at Ars Nova and The Cherry Lane; Deadclass, Ohio at The Tank; and Memonica at the HERE Arts Center). She is a Proud Member of EST Youngblood and a Company Member and Resident Playwright at The Goat Exchange. She holds an MFA from the University of Texas, Austin.
Director CHLOE CLAUDEL is also a performer and choreographer. She is co- artistic director of The Goat Exchange, a NY-based experimental performance ensemble with which she has created over 20 original works. With The Goat Exchange she has developed work at BAM, HERE Arts Center, New Ohio Ice Factory Festival, London VAULT Festival, LaMaMa, Torn Page, Ars Nova and Mabou Mines. Her recent credits include The Barbarians (LaMaMa), Forest of Metal Objects (The Met Cloisters), Deadclass, Ohio (The Tank), Time Passes at Mabou Mines and Target Margin Theater, Two Girls at Ars Nova and The Cherry Lane and What to Wear at BAM.
Dad Don’t Read This is playing at Greenwich House at 27 Barrow Street until July 18. The performance schedule is Monday and Wednesday through Saturdays at 7:30 PM with additional performances at 2:30pm on aturday July 11 and 7:30 PM on Sunday, July 12. SAMOVAR: Among his many many credits as an actor, acting teacher, producer and director, ROGER HENDRICKS SIMON is the both the director and producer of Samovar as well as the founder of the Roger Hendricks Simon Studio where training and performance go hand in hand, as both professional theater artists and students develop new plays and interpret the classics. Samovar is a collection of short plays based on short stories of Anton Chekhov written by Jonathan Ward, Nick de Simone, Gretchn O’Hallaran and Michael Donoghue, all four members of the Simon Studio collective.
Samovar will play for three performances only at the Midtown International Theater Festival on Sunday, July 19 at 12:45pm and 8:30pm and Monday July 20 at 6pm at the American Theater for Actors, 314 West 54 Street. For tix, go to the Festival website at Eventbrite.com/e/samovar -tickets.
