PROTECTING WOMEN FROM ENVIRONMENTAL ASSAULTS

Environmental standards from all federal agencies are oriented toward "Reference Man", who is a 6-foot-tall, 180 lb middle-class white male in his 20s. The same amount of toxic and radioactive substances hurt women, girls, boys, babies, and fetuses much more than they hurt "Reference Man."

This sort of environmental data should be acknowledged year-round, and especially during Women's History Month. Environmental standards that protect women and children will also protect 6-foot-tall, 180 lb middle-class white males in their 20s.

Our guests fight for all human health from different perspectives. Diane D’Arrigo, Radioactive Waste Project Director of NIRS (Nuclear Information and Resource Service) educates about what radioactivity from routine operation of nuclear plants does to human health. Alejandra Torres is the Assistant Director of Advocacy and Organizing with Ironbound Community Corporation, which includes work on environmental justice, toxic pollution, and Superfund sites.

We begin the show with news segments. This week:
* Animals who regulate their body temperature,
* Bumblebees not drowning after eight days under water,
* How the wildfire seasons are getting longer, and
* Two marsupials back from extinction.

Our music for you this week is “Women Planting Trees" by songwriter/performer David Roth.
