TEPCO-FUKUSHIMA DISASTER: WHAT'S HAPPENING NOW?
TEPCO. Tokyo electric power company, is a major sponsor of Japanese media – that should tell you a lot. How do you get truth when you have state-influenced media? NHK, the “NPR” of Japan, is also connected to TEPCO,
Reporters rotate every 3-5 years, so they know nothing about 15 years ago. It is always up to the past generation to inform the current and future generations, especially when the fourth estate, free independent media, doesn't do its traditional job.
We will address the ongoing health impacts of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster, particularly as they affect children, and government denial and stonewalling on all nuclear-power-oriented health issues both in the U.S. and Japan.
Joining us are
Rachel Clark, an interpreter, consultant, and global coordinator and long-time activist with Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World and Veterans For Peace who has also participated in various UN conferences and events as Peace Boat US staff.
Norma Field, professor emerita of Japanese Studies at the University of Chicago. She is the author of “In the Realm of a Dying Emperor: Japan at Century’s End” and co-editor and translator of “For Dignity, Justice, and Revolution: An Anthology of Japanese Proletarian Literature”. Norma is writing a book on the ongoing experience of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster and in relation to the global nuclear age.
We will go into detail on what is happening now at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants, official government and corporate response, and non-official grassroots US and Japanese response. We will talk about food, education, health, and military connections.
At the top of the show we talk about Northern Right Whales breeding succesfully, metal “space junk”, underestimated sea-level rise, and animals who can regulate their body temperature.
Our music for you this week is the John Hall song “I Told You So”, a sort-of a sequel to his safe-energy anthem “Power”, which is part of our solar-medley outro.
