DEFILING THE EPA: ENDANGERING US ALL
The P in the EPA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, seems to stand for Pollution in the current administration. Many environmental organizations have been suing the EPA to keep them on the right track and apparently win the lawsuits more often than not.
The latest, and possibly most severe attack, is to repeal the Endangerment Finding, which is the scientific determination that greenhouse gas pollution harms human health and welfare. Its repeal would dismantle core environmental protections, putting lives, communities, and climate progress at risk.
The 2009 EPA finding originated from a 2007 Supreme Court case, Massachusetts v. EPA, in which the Court ruled that six greenhouse gases qualify as pollutants under the Clean Air Act. A coalition of organizations sued the EPA last week to protect the Endangerment Finding and we'll have representatives from two of those groups on this episode.
Milagros Elia is the Program Manager for Climate and Clean Energy Advocacy at the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) where she leads national strategies on climate policy and health equity. She has over 25 years of experience as an Adult Nurse Practitioner and is a member of the National Hispanic Nurses Association’s Policy and Advocacy Committee. Milagros has written several press releases for ANHE.
Julie McNamara is an associate policy director with the Climate & Energy program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. Her research focuses on policies and measures that facilitate a rapid, sustained, and broadly beneficial transition of our nation’s energy system. This includes assessing energy, environmental, and public health policies at the state and federal levels.
Julie McNamara told Time magazine, “People and businesses across the country are struggling with rapidly escalating electricity costs. The country has real solutions at hand—yet instead of pushing ahead with investments in the fastest, cheapest, cleanest resources available, the Trump Administration is actively doing everything it can to stop the deployment of new solar and wind projects, to stop investments in energy efficiency, and to stop the buildout of modern grid infrastructure.”
We like to start the show with good news, and we have two good-news stories today. The news covers stopping illegal trade of sea turtles with science, farmers defending their land from data centers, and an update on the Global Plastics Treaty.
Our music for you this week is “Become America” by The Call. This is one of the last songs Michael Been wrote.
