THE MAYOR RELEASES HIS FIRST BUDGET
Mayor Zohran Mamdani campaigned on the promise of using city government to help address many of the challenges faced by NYC's poor, working and middle class residents. He also faces the constraints of a city budget that has to be balanced every year. Today, he releases his first executive budget. It will total around $120 billion and will express his budget priorities for the coming year. The release of the mayor's executive budget kicks off months of City Council hearings, protests and rallies by a wide array of community stakeholders and negotiations between the mayor and city council that will culminate in June with a final budget agreement. We'll speak with Peter Sterne, an editor at City & State about what's in the mayor's proposed budget and the political battles that lie ahead.
