LAW AND DISORDER OCTOBER 13, 2025
Co-hosts Heidi Boghosian and Maria Hall discuss a special support project for people subjected to ICE deportations. Each week inside New York City’s federal immigration courts, professors and staff from the City University of New York quietly resist injustice—not as lawyers, but as witnesses. Calling themselves “court watchers,” these educators document abuses, support immigrants facing deportation, and remind the public that what happens in these courts belongs to all of us.
Andrea Vásquez, from the CUNY Teachers union joins hosts. She explains how their court watching program operates. Andrea is an associate director of the American Social History Project at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Hosts are then joined by Professor Zachary Wolfe, editor of the legal treaties Hate Crime Law. As hate-fueled attacks are on the rise we examine whether hate-crime laws are being used to protect people—or to police speech. He’s here to help us understand how these laws are being used—and sometimes misused—in today’s polarized climate.
