ON "AI WEI WEI’S 'TURANDOT'”
On tonight’s show, we’ll be joined by director Maxim Derevianko and producer Christine LaMonte to discuss Ai Wei Wei’s Turandot, their new feature documentary about the artistic and political journey of the great Chinese revolutionary, artist and activist Ai WeiWei, in making his triumphant directorial debut by presenting Puccini’s great opera, Turandot, on the invitation of the Rome Opera House where this film’s award-winning director and cinematographer, Mr. Derevianko, has been the official filmmaker since 2015. In Ai Wei Wei’s Turandot, he captures the enormity of Ai Wei Wei’s accomplishment, in spite of almost insurmountable world events, including the pandemic, a violent war and displacement, and because of the artist’s huge vision and aspirations for art and humanity.
