Sunday, September 21, 2025 | 10 AM – 4 PM | 41st Street (between 6th & 7th Avenues), NYC
ALSO ON THE PROGRAM
New York City once tried to confiscate 227 Duffield Street—the home of Mama Joy and abolitionists Thomas & Hariett Truesdell . Mama Joy fought back—and she won. In doing so, she sparked a movement to honor and preserve the Black history of Downtown Brooklyn.
On this tour, you'll hear powerful stories of unsung heroes and sheroes whose legacies have been buried or erased from our streets. You'll discover surprising connections, like Ida B. Wells and her role in the Black Suffrage movement, and meet the black power couple of the 1800s, Reverend James Gloucester and his wife Elizabeth Gloucester—one of the wealthiest Black women in 19th-century America.
