CELEBRATION OF NATURE SERIES: BIRDS OF THE BEACHES
Every once in a while, Eco-Logic picks an aspect of Nature to celebrate. This week it's shorebirds. They migrate thousands of miles twice a year, to their breeding grounds on the tundra and then south to the Caribbean or South America. Our guest today is shorebird expert, Don Riepe, from the American Littoral Society, who was the manager of the Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge in New York City for many decades and has mentored hundreds, maybe thousands of naturalists, nature guides and rangers.
Why are shorebirds the favorite of Don Riepe and so many birders? They're beautiful, interesting, with distinctive patterns that make identification fun. Shorebirds are easy to see. Unlike forest birds, that are constantly moving, shorebirds stay put and allow for long looks. They have distinctive beaks of many different lengths, some multi-colored, some curved up, and some curved down.
Shorebirds are mostly sandpipers and plovers (and a few others), but there are many other types of birds you can see at beaches and along shorelines, such as herons, egrets, ibises, terns, gulls, ducks, geese, swans, cormorants, loons, grebes, hawks and sometimes pelicans. We’ll talk about them, too.
What happens at Shorebird Festivals, one of which Jamaica Bay NWR will have on Sunday, August 17th? We'll talk to the man who started those Festivals.
We open the show with news about libraries of things with toolkit, a French bank not investing in LNG, and agrivoltaics.
The music is “Shorebird” by Robin Lowe.
