The cavalier treatment by government and industry of the health hazards of radiation applies especially to victims downwind of nuclear bomb tests and people down stream when a dam break washes nuclear mill tailings down river. Both of those events happened about 5:30am, on July 16th--the Trinity nuclear bomb test in 1945 that started the nuclear bomb race-and in 1979 the Church Rock dam break that swept radioactive uranium mill tailings down the Puerco River.

People are, to this day, still dying from those events, mostly slow painful deaths from cancer or compromised immune systems. On July 3, 2025, Congress reauthorized claims under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and extended the RECA Trust Fund. In addition, the reauthorization expands the criteria for eligibility under RECA. The extension of RECA is good for the "Downwinders", people who were downwind of the Trinity test, but the Puerco River/Church Rock disaster is rarely ever acknowledged - most of the deaths have been Diné people and their livestock.

We’ll be joined by Leona Morgan, Diné Uranium Remediation Advisory Commissioner and Paul Pino of the Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, both activists who along with their families, friends, and communities have been directly affected.
