On tonight’s show we’ll be joined by Jonathan Friedmann author of Chai Noon: Jews and the Cinematic Wild West, and Michael Elias, screenwriter of a cinematic Jewish Western, The Frisco Kid.
Jonathan Friedman is the President of the Western States Jewish History Association; vice-president, academic dean and director of programs at Ezzree Institute ; admissions director and associate professor at the International Institute for Secular Humanistic Judaism; and Director of the Jewish Museum of the American West. He is the author or editor of numerous books, most recently Jewish Historical Societies: Navigating the Professional-Amateur Divide, co-edited with Joel Gereboff.
Besides The Frisco Kid, Michael Elias’s films include Envoyez les Violons with Eve Babitz, and Serial and Young Doctors in Love with Rich Eustis (with whom he also created the long-running TV series Head of the Class). Elias wrote and directed Showtime’s jazz film classic Lush Life with Forrest Whitaker and Jeff Goldblum. And, in his long collaboration with Steve Martin, he produced material for Martin’s comedy albums, network TV specials, and the screenplay for The Jerk.
