We are watching in real time as the Trump Administration dismantles feminist infrastructure built through 70 years of agitation, activism and work. Prime examples include: Roe v Wade (legal abortion), Title IX of the Civil Rights Act (equality for women in education and themViolence Against Women Act (VAWA), which, among other things, provides safe spaces for women fleeing domestic violence. All of these have come under attack by the Trump Administration.
In today's show we will be looking at how the Trump Administration is trying to unravel government support for the fight against men's violence against women, including sexual violence and harassment, the provision of safe spaces/shelters for domestic violence survivors as well as Trump's attempts to overturn or just not enforce the law that stops those with convictions for domestic violence from owning guns.
TODAY'S GUEST:
Professor Caroline Heldman, is a Political Scientist and Chair of the Gender, Women, & Sexuality Studies Program at Occidental College in Los Angeles. She was an organizer of End Rape on Campus (EROC), Faculty Against Rape (FAR), and led the campaign that overturned the time limit on prosecuting rape in California. (see below for her full biography).
We will be discussing Trump Administration attacks on Title IX, The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Military Rules on Sexual Violence--and related matters. We will also refute the misogynist conspiracy theory that forces wanting to ''get Trump" engineered E. Jean's Carroll's Civil Suit against him for raping her and changed laws in NYS in order to do this (spoiler: it was the feminist movement's long time work on this issue that made it possible for NYS to allow the loosening of the Statute of Limitations on Rape for one year, under which E. Jean Carroll sued (and won) against Trump.
This show will also include a feminist news segment and topical music.
