RICHARD BARR 1977 COVERSATION WITH JOHN HAMMOND

With renewed interest in the legendary record producer, John Hammond, as a result of his portrayal in the new Bob Dylan movie, "A Complete Unknown", given that he was the first to give Dylan a recording contract at Columbia Records, we present an interview  conducted by Richard Barr with Hammond in 1977, when Hammond's autobiography, "John Hammond on Record" was published.  He talks about his career, starting in the 1930's and being the first to record Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, etc. etc. and continuing through later eras with Dylan, Carolyn Hester, Bruce Springsteen, etc. and featuring some of that music woven through the program.  He also talks about his life with emphasis on some of his efforts to promote civil rights in the country.
