A CELEBRATION OF RICHARD FOREMAN
A CELEBRATION OF RICHARD FOREMAN
On tonight’s show, we’ll be joined by theater artists Kate Valk, Jim Fletcher, Tony Torn and Ivo Muller to celebrate the life and work of the late great playwright, director, lyricist and impresario of the Ontological Hysteric Theater, the boundary-making and boundary-breaking Richard Foreman, who died on January 3 at age 87, just as his work, old and new, has been enjoying a new resurgence (one, Symphony of Rats, in the hands of
The Wooster Group, represented here by Valk and Fletcher). Foreman’s theatrical aim was, as he once explained it, to combine the study of existence – ontology -- with situations that were “basically hysteric – repressed passions emerging as philosophical interactions.” A New York Times critic once described him as “an avant-garde lifer.” However, you crack it, he will remain for eternity ahead of his time.
