We are excited to announce a new episode in our special series, This Ain't No Disco, This IS CBGB---the iconic New York City music venue, for WBAI Radio in New York. The project, spearheaded by Jillian Jonas, a veteran journalist and senior producer of WBAI's public affairs show Living for the City, commemorates the 50th anniversary of CBGB's opening.
CBGB decidedly changed the face of first American, then contemporary, music worldwide. I used to work there and it's a total labor of love. This episode, How It Happened, focuses on several of the factors that contributed to making CBGB the institution it became.
Our goal is to delve deeply into the rich history of CBGB, painting a broader picture of the club during the first punk wave and highlighting stories and voices often overlooked.
We have planned episodes focusing on various aspects, including:
--Women at CBGB beyond the well-known names like Patti Smith and Debbie Harry;
--The people who worked behind the scenes;
--The festivals, record label, and theater associated with the club;
--Bands and individuals who didn't receive the recognition they deserve;
The project will feature interviews conducted via Zoom, making it easy for anyone to participate with just a phone. Music will be a central element throughout the program.
If you have any anecdotes or stories about CBGB, we'd love to hear from you! You can reach out to us via email to share your experiences or discuss how you can get involved more actively.
