You’re listening to Black Agenda Report, where we provide news, commentary, and analysis from a Black, left perspective. I’m Margaret Kimberley.
In this week’s segment, we talk to a socialist congressional candidate in Washington state but we begin with a discussion of the Trump administration’s red scare and state repression of Black and left organizing.
Recently Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a document: Cuba: the Capital of 21st Century Communism which both justifies the genocidal siege against that country and attempts to criminalize leftist organizing. The release of this document was preceded by executive order National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7) which provides a rationale for state repression. How do these actions impact Black people and what is the history of these scares that are used against Black people. Our guest is Dr. Charisse Burden Stelly. She’s the author of Black Scare / Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States which was published in 2023. She will also discuss her recently completed project, This Is America, which appeared on Instagram.
Our guest is Kshama Sawant. She is a former Seattle, Washington City Council Member best known for her role in raising the minimum wage to $21 per hour, the highest in the nation. She is now running for congress in the 9th district of Washington as a socialist candidate and the open "jungle" primary election for that race takes place on August 4th. She joins us from Seattle to discuss her campaign.
