In this week’s segment we will hear the latest in the effort to decarcerate New York City by closing Rikers Island. But first we focus on Venezuela, where I’m reporting on the struggle against U.S. economic coercive measures. I speak with another member of an anti-imperialist delegation and also remember Glen Ford’s commentary on U.S. policy towards Venezuela.
I was invited to join a delegation in Venezuela with the International People’s Tribunal on U.S. Imperialism: Sanctions, Blockades, Coercive Economic Measures, which together with the National Lawyers Guild (U.S.) and the International Association of Democratic Lawyers, is conducting the last in a series of hearings and a a fact-finding mission in Venezuela on the impact of U.S. sanctions and coercive economic measures targeting this nation.
Jaribu Hill is also part of the delegation. She is a civil and human rights attorney and the Founder and Executive Director of the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights. She is the author of Knowledge is Power - A Know Your Rights Manual and co-author of The Black College Guide. She is a juror in the international people’s tribunal on sanctions. We spoke in Caracas, Venezuela. And made connections between international and domestic issues.
Black Agenda Report co-founder Glen Ford transitioned on July 28, 2021. This week I’m reporting from Caracas, Venezuela where I’m part of an International Peoples Tribunal on US Imperialism fact finding mission and delegation which will hold a hearing on the issue of US economic coercive measures, commonly known as sanctions, which have been waged against Venezuela by the Obama, Trump and Biden administraitons. In honor of Glen’s memory, I will read from a 2019 article he wrote when Donald Trump began his maximum pressure campaign against Venezuela. He titled this piece The Racist Imperialist War Against Venezuela.
Melanie Dominguez is lead organizer for the Katal Center for Equity, Health and Justice. She joins us to discuss the ongoing crisis at the Rikers Island jail in New York City. Twenty-five people have died in New York City jails during the Eric Adams administration. Melanie Dominguez joins us from New York City to discuss the demand that Rikers Island be closed down for good.
