On tonight’s show, we’ll be joined by poet D. Nurkse, author of twelve poetry collections, most recently A Country of Strangers, a “new and selected” title just out from Knopf. His previous books include Love in the Last Days, A Night in Brooklyn, and Voices Over Water, a finalist for the Forward Prize for best poetry book published in the UK in 2011.

Nurkse has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, Whiting and Tanne Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. He’s the recipient of the Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He worked in human rights as a program officer for Defense for Children International-USA and as a consultant for UNICEF. His reports on children under apartheid and the repression of children in Haiti were used in asylum hearings. He was elected to a term on the board of Amnesty International USA. He has also taught poetry at Rikers Island, in inner-city schools and literacy programs. He currently teaches in the MFA program at Sarah Lawrence College. He was recently heard on this program as one of the WBAI Quartet of Poets, with whom he has been performing radio readings since 2004.
