Synopsis: While many celebrated the birthday of Dr Martin Luther King jr on January 17, 2022, the date holds additional significance. On January 17, 1961 the democratically elected Prime Minister of the newly independent Congo, Patrice Lumumba, was assassinated. This murder of a head of state was carried out by Congolese stooges with the support of the United States, England, France and Belgium. The destabilization and plunder of the resource rich Congo continues until now.
Progressive forces around the world have declared January 17th as Lumumba Day.  A panel discussion was convened on WBAI to discuss the importance of Patrice Lumumba and the struggle of the Congolese people to be free. The participants were Dr Chinzera Davis Kahina of the University of the Virgin Islands, longtime activist Paul Pumphrey and activist/musician Passy Bass of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The conversation was led by WBAI's Basir Mchawi whose program, Education at the Crossroads is heard on Thursdays at 8 pm.
