An article in Scientific American about an extra gene in songbirds might explain why there are so many bird species. We interviewed one of the scientists quoted in the article, Anne-Marie Dion-Cote.
The article will be a jumping off point to explain
Why speciation occurs,
How evolution works in nature,
Why ecosystems are the way they are,
How not all cells have the same genes,
and things like that.
Anne-Marie Dion-Cote has a background in molecular biology and genetics, and did her PhD studying speciation.
