Thursday September 2, 11am-Noon Joy of Resistance
A Year in the Life of Reproductive Rights under Obama. Guest: Erin Matson, Action VP of the National Organization for Women, takes us through the last year in reproductive rights under our "pro-choice" President -- and disputes the myth that her generation of younger women is indifferent to the issue. Part 2: A tribute to former Joy of Resistance producer and inspired feminist / social justice activist Jennifer Fasulo who died two weeks ago at 43. Excerpts of her JOR work. Hosts: Fran Luck, Maretta Short.

Joy of Resistance mourns the death of producer Jennifer Fasulo
Maretta Short and Fran Luck of Joy of Resistance: Multicutural Feminist Radio are extremely sad to announce the death of former Joy of Resistance producer Jennifer Fasulo, killed in a car crash on August 18 at the age of 43.

Jennifer was a dedicated and passionate feminist and social justice activist throughout her life, having been active in tenant rights, union rights, women's rights, LGBT rights and anti-racistwork. As a producer for JOR, from 2004 to 2007, she opened up new territory for the show, bringing onto the airwaves of WBAI, the voices of Middle Eastern women who represented movements that were feminist/secular and socialist and which fought against both U.S. imperialism and Islamic theocracy. She pioneered programming that brought to light the leading but little-known role that Black Women-led organizations had played in the Civil Rights movement, especially the Women's Political Council, under the leadership of Joanne Robinson, which had organized and launched the Montgomery bus boycott. She was also instrumental in Maretta Short becoming a producer with Joy of Resistance.

Saturday September 4, 7-8:30am As I Please
"Some Enchandlered Mornings". Beginning Saturday 4 September, and continuing for the next two weeks, AS I PLEASE presents a serialization of the short novel RED WIND by Raymond Chandler.  The story features Philip Marlowe, among the brightest and assuredly the wittiest of the hard-boiled dicks, a pretty girl, a couple of cops and a thug or two. Simon Loekle reads the text; Ben Webster and Stuff Smith will provide the musical breaks.

Sunday September 5, 6-7PM Equal Time for Freethought
A one-hour special! Towards a Healthy Society? with Dr. Bruce Levine and Cindy Milstein. What makes a healthy society? Are we blank slates which can produce any sort of society we desire or do we only create the kinds of societies our genetic and evolutionary heritage could allow; and if the latter is only partly true, what does our evolutionary heritage say about human nature anyway?

Building Bridges Special: Unemployment is unabated and poverty is on the rise; It's still a recession, for many, and for others its an outright depression. Voting Practice
This year New Yorkers will be voting with new machines that employ a paper ballot and automatically produce a verifiable paper record in compliance with the Help America Vote Act. In preparation for Election Day, the Board of Elections in the City of New York is conducting an education campaign that includes demonstrations at community events and Learning Centers in all five boroughs. At these events, voters can kick the tires on the new optical scanning system. Yes, it's voting practice.

For dates and locations see this calendar. You can also visit the Learning Center in your local Board of Elections Borough Office. For a schedule, see the PDF flyers here. There is also a cheat sheet for the new system and answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

News Department Special on Modern Slavery
The Florida Modern Slavery Museum is a traveling exhibit that shows the poor working conditions and abusive practices inflicted on many fruit pickers in Florida, many of which are undocumented. Those practices have become the evidence in at least 8 federal lawsuits against employers who abused their workers. The museum is endorsed by ten leading human rights and anti-slavery organizations, and was in New York this week to let people understand the conditions under which tomatoes are picked and end up on their dinner plates.
