Lakota Activist Phyllis Young
Phyllis Young is the co-founder of Women of All Red Nations established in 1978. She is former Chair of Board of Trustees for the National Museum of the American Indian and former Tribal Council Member of Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
Phyllis says, although 1978 was a good year with the Indian Religious Freedom Act, we had to step up and fight to stop sterilization of Indian people and also stop the contamination of water at Pine Ridge.
As women we had a duty to preserve the life of our people. Mni Wiconi became priority so we did our own studies on the contamination, while the Center for Disease Control condemned us for being alarmists.
