FILM: "DREAMING WALLS: THE STORY OF THE CHELSEA HOTEL"

On tonight’s show we’ll be joined by filmmakers Amelie Van Elmbt and Maya Duverdier and hotel resident Steve Willis to discuss the new film, Dreaming Walls: Inside the Chelsea Hotel. It’s a look at the mythical past and uncertain future of one of the last enclaves of New York bohemia, the haven for famous artists, intellectuals and counter-culture icons such as Leonard Cohen, Arthur Miller, Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith, Virgil Thompson, Janis Joplin and Sid Vicious.

In 2011 Amelie VanElmbt directed and self-produced her first feature, Headfirst, which screened in Cannes’ ACID section and won her first award at the New York First Time Festival. There she met Martin Scorsese, who executive produced her second feature, in 2017, The Elephant & The Butterfly, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won the Grand Prize at the Heartland International Film Festival. No accident that Scorsese is also the executive producer of Dreaming Walls.

Maya Duverdier obtained her Master’s degree in cinema at the Ecole Canatonale d’Art de Lausanne with her documentary Jeanne Sans Arc. She has since worked in film and television as a director and writer for narrative and documentary projects. Dreaming Walls is her first feature documentary.

Visual artist Steve Willis has lived at the Chelsea Hotel since 1994.
