We Decide: NYC at the Crossroads 2025 with co-hosts John Tarleton and Ariana Orozco
In an historic upset, Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani bested former Gov. Andrew Cuomo who only got 34.4 percent to Mamdani’s 43.5 percent of the almost one million ballots cast.
While not clearing the 50 percent threshold required by rank voting, Mamdani was expected to benefit from his cross endorsement of NYC Comptroller Brad Lander who came in third place with over 11 percent of the votes cast.
Next Tuesday, final ranked voting tabulations are set to be released.
The Democratic Primary contest was being watched nationally and around the world, as sanctuary cities like New York City grapple with President Trump’s push for his controversial mass deportation of millions of people, many of whom live in families that include citizens, green card holders and undocumented under the same roof.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim who was born in Africa, benefited from the grassroots community-based organizing of the Democratic Socialists of America and the endorsements of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
For four hours on election night, the Indypendent Newspaper and the WBAI public affairs team reported in real time on this historic election as a younger generation won a seat at the table.
