NYPD Internal Affairs and Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson are both investigating officers involved in a violent arrest in Bed-Stuy that was caught on camera at the end of August. Graphic security camera video, below, appears to show officers beating an unarmed teen as the young man tries to surrender.
Brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson tells DNAinfo, "What’s depicted on this video is troubling and warrants a thorough investigation." Another source tells the website that NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton is "angered and embarrassed" by the video.
According to court records obtained by DNAinfo, Kahreem Tribble caught officers' attention when they spotted him peering into a van parked in Bed-Stuy shortly after 2 a.m. on August 29th. When officers emerged from their vehicle to approach Tribble, he allegedly tossed a small canvas bag and ran. A short foot-chase concluded with Tribble, 16, apparently attempting to surrender.
The video, which is silent, shows Tribble stopping as officer Tyrane Isaac catches up to him and punches Tribble in the head. As Tribble backs up against a storefront with his hands up, another officer, David Afanador, appears to strike him in the head with his firearm. A third officer, Christopher Mastoros, did not intervene.
Tribble was arrested for possessing 17 small bags of marijuana and disorderly conduct; he sustained broken teeth and bruises during the arrest. Afanador has been suspended without pay, while Isaac was placed on modified duty, stripped of his badge and gun, DNAinfo reports.
