"We are encouraged that the Department of Justice has opened a full investigation into the killing of our son Ramarley. We believe clear and sufficient evidence of civil rights violations exists for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara to bring charges against the NYPD officers responsible. Police officers cannot bust into a house without a warrant and shoot an unarmed civilian in front of their grandmother and 6-year-old brother, as NYPD officers did to Ramarley, without legal repercussions.
We hope that the Department of Justice also thoroughly investigates the NYPD's abusive handling of our family - myself and Ramarley's grandmother - after officers killed my son. The civil rights and lives of Black and Brown Americans must be protected the same as those of white Americans, and we are looking to U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Attorney General Eric Holder and President Obama to ensure that is the case by upholding the law."
