Dr. Angelou, who died on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86, was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. The New York Public Library writes, "Her words and actions continue to stir our souls, energize our bodies, liberate our minds, and heal our hearts."
The memorial celebration was hosted by the family of Dr. Maya Angelou; Random House; The Schomburg Center in Black Culture, part of The New York Public Library; and The Center for Black Literature at Medgar Evers College, CUNY.
