El Salvador pays tribute to the much loved Bishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero who was assassinated by a sniper while he was conducting mass.
Yesterday, March 24, marks 34 years since Bishop Romero was assassinated while conducting mass. Bishop Romero was an adamant opposer of U.S. "aid" and spoke out against the human rights violations occurring by the army and national authorities in this Central American country.
Prensa Latino reports that the tribute begins inside the hospital’s chapel, Hospital of the Divine Providence where Bishop Romero was hit by the sniper on March 24, 1980. Then the procession will go to the Metropolitan Cathedral where his remains rest. Throughout the day there will be various events along with a pilgrimage.
Also, President Mauricio Funes will be at El Salvador's International Airport to unveil the new name of the airport: Bishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero and Galdamez.
His death was attributed to the ultra-right wing mayor Roberto D’Aubuisson, founder of the AlianzaRepublican Nationalist party (ARENA). There have still been no arrests made nor detentions.
