Donald Carey says he doesn’t mind giving up his usual Friday night plans to sleep on the cold concrete on 41st street.
He is one of 200, joining a nationwide movement called the Young Professional Sleep Out with Covenant House Friday, which takes in thousands of people off new York city streets each year and helps them find jobs. This is the second sleep out by the shelter and it aims to raise awareness by having participants sleep on the street for a night.
Tamika Smith is just one of hundreds of residents who has been living at covenant House for more than a month and knows all too well what its like to be out in the cold.
She’s amazed that a group—made up of 20-somethings in business, government and media--is standing up in solidarity to raise money and awareness for an issue that effects more than 4,000 people a year in new York.
