Opposing Violence Against Women: One Billion Rising in Washington Square
- Washington Square Park, NYC 02/14/2013 by Tom Newman

On Thursday, February 14th, hundreds of women gathered in Washington Square Park to perform a choreographed dance to Tena Clark’s “Break the Chain.” The performance marked just one of the myriad demonstrations occurring worldwide as part of One Billion Rising, a global campaign to end violence against women.

The One Billion Rising campaign was organized as a response to a 2003 UNIFEM report suggesting that over one-third of the world’s women will experience violence in their lifetimes. As part of the campaign, women and men in more than 190 countries engaged in public demonstrations to support the one billion women victimized by physical or sexual abuse.

The event marked the fifteenth anniversary of V-Day, a global activist movement for the cessation of violence against women. V-Day is spearheaded by renowned playwright Eve Ensler, most famous for her episodic play The Vagina Monologues.
