INDIGENOUS FILMS AT 2017 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL

In this edition, “First Voices Radio” features two of the nine Indigenous-made films that will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, January 19-29 in Park City, Utah. In the first half-hour, Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse speaks with Director Amanda Kernell(Sámi) about her debut feature film, “Sámi Blood,” the first feature film shot by a Sámi director. Since 2006 Amanda has made several award-winning short films. Her latest short film “Stoerre Vaerie (Northern Great Mountain)” premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2015 and won Best Swedish short film at Uppsala Film Festival and the Audience Award for Best Swedish Short Film at Gothenburg Film Festiva the same year. In 2016 it was nominated for a Guldbagge, the Swedish Academy Award. “Stoerre Vaerie (Northern Great Mountain)” is the pilot and the prologue to the feature film “Sami Blood (Sameblod).” “Sami Blood” premiered at Venice Film Festival where it was awarded Europa Cinemas Label for best European Film and FEDEORAs award for best first time director. The film has since been screened and awarded at festivals around the world. In the second half-hour, Tiokasin welcomes Michelle Latimer (Métis/Algonquin), a Toronto based filmmaker, programmer, actor and activist. Michelle’s films include “Choke” (Sundance Special Jury Honorable Mention in International Short Filmmaking), “The Underground,” “Nimmikaage” and the feature doc “ALIAS.” Michelle is currently adapting the bestselling novel “The Inconvenient Indian” by Thomas King for screen, directing a short doc for Field of Vision and showrunning the series “RISE” for Viceland. She programs the Hot Docs Film Festival and the Dawson City International Short Film Festival. Three episodes from “RISE” — “Apache Stronghold,” “Sacred Water: Standing Rock Part 1,” and “Red Power: Standing Rock Part 2” — will be screened at the Festival.
