Founded in 1996, New York City Community Garden Coalition's mission is to promote the preservation, creation, and empowerment of community gardens through education, advocacy, and grassroots organizing.

WHERE WE STAND The community gardens of New York City are a true representation of our city, and are as beautifully diverse as its people. They produce food. They enlighten and entertain. They reconnect us with each other and the Earth. And they are feeling threatened and ready to find solutions. Again.

Currently twenty-seven community gardens still remain classified as “Subject to Development” by the Agreement, meaning that they are presently under the jurisdiction of the Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD), and could potentially be developed for housing or commercial purposes. Could that happen to other gardens when the settlement ends?

Spirit of Thunderheart

Donna Coane is a member of the Schaghticoke First Nations and Lead of Spirit of Thunderheart with four other women drummers, Brenda Martin, Debbie Fichtner, Wynona Decker and Mary Griffin. Spirit of Thunderheart have won a Native American Music Award for their CD Rising in the category Best Traditional Recording. They are the first women’s drum group to ever win a Native American Music Award!  Spirit of Thunderheart led the people's votes which was an amazing accomplishment for the Native American women’s drum group.
Spirit of Thunderheart came together from Four Directions of the Hudson Valley, New York, they started off sharing the drums heart beat along with their voices to spread their passion of native music. They all had come from other musical backgrounds and drum groups before.
As our Ancestors battled the coming of the Europeans we had our culture running strong in our language, stories, songs, planting, Hunting, and our beliefs. Turtle Island was alive with no harm to her, our air or water. We taught our children to give thanks and respect all living on Turtle Island so that the next Seven Generations will have a clean and balanced Turtle Island.
