OBAMA AT THE NUCLEAR SECURITY SUMMIT, PROTESTS IN TAIWAN, AND SCIENTISTS' REMARKABLE NEW DISCOVERY
Wednesday, March 26, 2014 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
In addition to a hasty meeting of what was the G8, now the G7 after the US and other member governments announced the expulsion of Russia from the body, President Obama in his visit to the Netherlands participated in his third Nuclear Security Summit. Meanwhile nuclear hawks in the US are using the re-integration of the Crimea with Russia as an excuse to call for more spending on new nuclear weapons. Our guest is Alice Slater with the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation.
And a hotspot in Asia as protests in Taiwan against a controversial trade agreement between China and Taiwan spilled into the streets with students taking over the national legislature and the government using water cannons and other repressive measures against them, even as thousands gathered in their support. What's going on? Why isn't Taiwan as anxious as the US and Russia to pivot towards China? Our guest is Dr. Ketty Chen, from Taiwan University's Institute for Advanced Studies.
And researchers associated with the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics stunned the world last week with the discovery of waves created when the universe was a tiny fraction of a second old. It confirmed the theory of inflation. Breaking it down for us is Professor David Kaiser, a Professor of the history of Science and a senior lecturer in the Dept of Physics at MIT.
Also, our weekly Earth Minute.
