Program Director:

Purpose/General Description of Position:

            Responsible for the “sound” or programming format of the station - all music, news, community-based/diversity programs, and other broadcasts.

Essential Functions:

            - Develop/manages programming format

            - Institutes a program evaluation system

            - Coordinates programs with National Director of Programming 

            - Assures compliance with all applicable FCC regulations

           - Other duties as may be assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

            Responsible for all on-air staff and all producers

Minimum Requirements:

            Skills/Knowledge: Emphasis on knowledge of industry (audience research, broadcast management, etc.) experience of interacting with community-based organizations, and excellent communication skills (oral and written).

            Experience/Education: Requirements typically are a college degree in broadcasting or business with at least 5 years of actual experience as a program producer and/or program manager, preferably in public radio.

I.          General Functions

A.         Supervise programming format.

B.         Develop and institute a program evaluation system.

C.         Coordinate programming needs with Operations, Administration and Training.

D.         Supervise programming department heads.

E.         Coordinate programming with the National Programming Director and other Pacifica stations.

F.         Communicate with staff.

G.         Develop Audience Research.

H.         Participate as a member of the management team.

II.         Specific Responsibilities

A. 

1.         Develop programming philosophy and policies with Pacifica and staff.

2.         Improve air sound.

3.         Solicit and evaluate program proposals.

4.         Make final programming decisions.

5.         Route DACS messages to appropriate department.

6.         Assure compliance with FCC and Pacifica rules and regulations.

7.         Coordinate the development of Marathon and special programs.

8.         Coordinate representation of Third World programs and issues in all departments.

9.         Coordinate representation of women’s programs and issues in all departments.

10.       Develop audience building plans.

B.

1.         Develop evaluation criteria with staff.

2.         Participate on appeals panel regarding evaluation and program changes.

C.

1.  Upgrade skills and equipment.

2.         Procure programming supplies.

3.         Facilitate entry of graduate apprentices into programming and other departments.

4.         Participate in off-air fundraising and community events.

D.

1.         Chair Program Council meetings.

2.         Evaluate programs of department heads.

3.         Supervise work of department heads.

4.         Evaluate work of department heads.

E.

1.         Participate in the development of national programs.

2.         Discuss plans, programming and process regularly with _______ staff.

3.         Provide input to national staff.

F.

1.         Write and distribute a monthly Programmer’s memo.

2.         Call meetings with staff as necessary to discuss programming and other issues.

3.         Participate in staff meetings as necessary.

G.

1.         Prepare data for Arbitron.

H.

1.         Coordinate work with other members of the management team.

2.         Report to General Manager.

I.          Participate in budget preparation.
