Lawmakers Want Federal Probe Into Eric Garner's Death and into Broken Windows Policing
- New York City 08/14/2014 by Linda Perry (WBAI)

Eric Garner in choke hold by NYPD just before he died.
At One Police Plaza in lower Manhattan, a New York Congressional Delegation called for a federal investigation into the death of Eric Garner, the Staten Island man who died in a police choke hold.

The New York Delegation, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries, Yvette Clarke, Gregory Meeks, Charles Rangel, Jose Serrano and Nydia Velazquez, want to make sure the family of Eric Garner can get a fair, impartial and independent investigation into his tragic death.

And Broken Windows, the police tactic of going after petty crimes to stop larger crimes, is an area the delegation wants the Justice Department to investigate. They say it disproportionately targets people of color and they want to have conversations with Mayor de Blasio on the effectiveness of Broken Windows and whether it violates the civil rights of New Yorkers.
