Free Concerts & More, Aug 7-10
- 08/07/2014 by Matthew Barnes

Saturday & Sunday- Seed 2014- anything and everything vegan will converge on Soho for discussion, lectures, and of course, eating. If you use the code “seed50” when purchasing tickets, you’ll get 50% off.

Thursday- Free Concert by The Roots- Grammy-winning and generally brilliant hip-hop group The Roots are playing at 7pm at Guitar Center’s newest location in Times Square, to commemorate the grand opening. Tickets are being given out at Guitar Center’s eight other locations around the NY Metro Area, while supplies last, and limited to 1 per person.

Friday- Asian Dub Foundation & Taylor McFerrin @ Prospect Park Bandshell- In a special BRIC commission (co-comissioned by Music Beyond Mainstream), the iconic London band performs the world premiere of its new original live score to George Lucas’ feature directorial debut THX 1138 (1971), a chilling dystopian fantasy set in an Orwellian future where moodstabilizing drugs are mandatory, sex is prohibited, and a young Robert Duval quietly rages against the system. Before the film, Taylor McFerrin (son of Bobby McFerrin) layers vocals, beat boxing, samples, and live instruments in a remarkable one-man performance that “builds from his roots deep in ‘60s soul to his vision of future hip-hop.”

Friday- Hudson River Park’s River Flicks will show Groundhog Day on Pier 46, as part of their Family Fridays series. Showing begins around 8:30.

Saturday- St. Vincent & San Fermin @ Prospect Park Bandshell- Celebrate Brooklyn!’s 36th season goes out like a lion as St. Vincent makes her long-awaited Bandshell debut. Having released arguably one of the best albums of the year, it’s not a show you'll want to miss. The show’s opener, Brooklyn-based San Fermin, offers music just as exciting albeit markedly different, with complex vocal arrangements and cinematic atmosphere.
