FREE & CHEAP NYC - Week starting February 14, 2014
- Brooklyn, New Yok 02/13/2014 by Angela Church & Maayan Schneider (WBAI)

Free & Cheap NYC is excited to be back at WBAI after its winter hiatus!

So this week, for a different kind of Valentine’s Day, how about you attend one of these events?

ART
“From the Heart” at the Wooster Street Social Club in Manhattan is an art installation that evokes imagery "From The Heart"s of the 40+ global artists featured in this show.

Whether fellow tattooers or artists that utilize different forms of media, each of the event's featured artists have distinct visions of what "From the Heart" means, so this exhibit features an eclectic mix of images, throughout February.

The opening event is a 21+ event, from 5pm to 9pm, February 14th, and will feature music and refreshments. A portion of the proceeds of all the art sold from this exhibit will go to CHF, the Children's Heart Foundation. For more details, click HERE.

[Another idea is to celebrate by getting a tattoo - A REAL way to answer that age-old Paula Abdul question, “Straight up now tell me, are you really gonna love me forever?” Just a thought.]

MUSIC

Also on Friday, 2/14, at 8pm: Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre violinist Sarah Neufeld performs selections from her debut solo album at The Kitchen, $15.

Neufeld performs selections from her debut solo album Hero Brother (Constellation Records), channeling her formative influences like Steve Reich, Iva Bittova, and Arthur Russell into new compositions whose electro-acoustic and avant-folk sensibilities shift from restrained, stately ambience and emotive etude to raw kinetic energy. With a guest appearance by Colin Stetson. For more information, click HERE.

On Monday, 2/17, you can attend Toshi Reagon’s Pete Seeger Community Sing Along, at Joe’s Pub, 9:30 pm.
The event is free - they will be accepting donations forRocking the Boat”, a charity working with Bronx students, teaching them to work together to build wooden boats, learn to row and sail, and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves.  Their goal is to help young people recognize the beauty in their own communities, and inspire them to identify and develop solutions to social and environmental problems.

FOOD AND DRINK
Through Friday, 2/28: The Bar at Clement at the Peninsula (55th St. & 5th Ave.) is taking $1 off the price of winter cocktails for every degree the temperature drops below 25.  If it reaches zero degrees, they'll throw in complimentary petit fours!  This is, without a doubt, our favorite item of the week.

Also, through 2/14: buy a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts, get a dozen Valentine's Day cards, each redeemable for a free doughnut. The perfect gift.

Happy Valentine's Day!  Eat, drink, and be merry!
